How to Play (and win) the Networking Game?

Hi There!

Earlier this week, we talked about the benefits of goal setting during job hunting and how to define our personal values, strengths and career goals. Today’s article focuses on the final step in defining the job search goals: How to rock you Networking gameplan!

Networking is not only about gathering those precious business cards, but it’s really about building professional relationships that convert to your dream job offer.

But Richa, My resume is quite strong.Do I really need to network?

There is more than sufficient evidence to motivate yourself to jump on the networking bandwagon:

  • Payscale says upwards of 85% open positions are filled through networking
  • LinkedIn survey reveals that 85% of all jobs are filled via networking
  • Forbes survey stats are no different, 86% respondents finding jobs through networking

Can I share a little secret? I got my current position through networking within my company!!

Networking doesn’t start a week before you need a job. It has to be part of your long-term career strategy. Make use of the networking tracker to regularly connect with your contacts (download here).

So, where to network?

  • Within your own company for future opportunities (just like I did)
  • On-campus recruiting fairs, and for my young professionals, there are several recruiting fairs held around town
  • Professional societies like SPE, SWE, NAWMBA, etc. Pro tip: volunteer your time with these societies to make solid connections, and frankly good friends.
  • Friends and family. Your aunt may not be working for your dream company, but she maybe able to connect you with someone who does!
  • LinkedIn. Be part of this online world by genuinely adding value, making your mark, and then asking for jobs.

Finally, I want to share with you my top 3 tips for rocking your networking gameplan:

  • Always give first before you ask. When you make a connection, in-person or online, think how you can help the person first before handing them your resume.
  • Don’t treat networking events as speed dating. If you have an hour to spare, spend quality time knowing 5 people instead of collecting 30 business cards. Then, spend time nurturing those relationships (Download the handy networking tracker here).
  • Request a phone or coffee chat when you meet someone at a company event. People love to talk about their experiences. This is an excellent way to get intel on the company of interest, and there is much greater likelihood that they will refer you to the hiring manager.
